Pigeons are a familiar sight in urban and rural landscapes across the globe, known for their adaptability. Pigeon Lifespan: Wild vs. Domestic

The typical lifespan of a pigeon varies considerably depending on its environment. Wild or feral pigeons generally face a more challenging existence, leading to a shorter average lifespan. In the wild, rock pigeons (Columba livia), a common species, typically live for about 3 to 5 years. In contrast, domestic pigeons can have an extended lifespan, often reaching 10 to 15 years under human care. Some have lived up to 20 years, with exceptional cases reaching 24.

The difference in longevity largely stems from the varied conditions and challenges pigeons encounter in different settings. Domestic pigeons, often kept as pets or for racing, benefit from controlled environments, consistent food access, and protection from various threats. This protection allows them to live much longer than their wild counterparts, whose lives are often cut short by environmental pressures.

Influences on Longevity

Several external factors determine a pigeon’s lifespan. Predation is a threat, especially for wild pigeons, which are prey for various raptors like hawks and falcons, and ground predators such as cats and raccoons. The constant exposure to these natural enemies contributes to the shorter lifespans observed in wild populations.

Consistent food and clean water also impact a pigeon’s health and survival. While urban environments often provide abundant, albeit sometimes unhealthy, food scraps, rural pigeons might face higher competition for resources. An inadequate diet can lead to malnutrition and weakened immune systems, making pigeons more vulnerable to diseases and other threats. Common Health Challenges

Diseases and parasites affect pigeon longevity, especially in wild populations lacking veterinary care. Common ailments include protozoal infections like Canker (Trichomoniasis), which can cause breathing difficulties and weight loss, and Coccidiosis, affecting the digestive tract. Bacterial infections like Salmonellosis (Paratyphoid) and E. coli can also impact pigeons, leading to symptoms like weight loss, diarrhea, and weakened immune systems. Viral infections such as Pigeon Pox and Paramyxovirus (PMV-1) can cause visible lesions, neurological issues, or even sudden death.

Pigeons are also susceptible to internal parasites like roundworms, hairworms, and tapeworms, which reside in the digestive tract and can lead to weakness and increased susceptibility to illness. External parasites such as mites and lice can cause irritation, feather damage, and even transmit diseases. Injuries from accidents, such as collisions with structures or vehicles, or from fights with other animals, frequently occur and can reduce a pigeon’s chances of survival.
