Seasonal droughts can lead to dry waterholes, which can be fatal to elephants.
Human activities pose threats that can shorten an elephant’s life. Poaching for ivory tusks has decimated populations, particularly targeting older, larger males. Determining Elephant Age

One common technique involves examining dental wear patterns, as elephants have six sets of molars that emerge and wear down predictably. The appearance and wear of specific molars, including the final sets that emerge in their early 40s and must last for life, can indicate an elephant’s age.
While less common for live animals, growth rings in tusks can also provide age estimates, similar to tree rings. This method requires the animal to be deceased. Researchers also rely on long-term observation and identification of individual elephants, tracking their growth and changes in physical characteristics like ear notches, skin wrinkles, and overall body size.
