They reach maturity around 40 centimeters in length and have a maximum lifespan of about three years.
Yellowfin tuna are caught when young, reaching maturity around two years of age. Their average lifespan is between five and seven years. Albacore tuna, known for their white meat, are caught when they are between three and five years old. These fish reach maturity around five years of age and can live for 10 to 13 years.
Bluefin tuna species, including Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern bluefin, are the largest and longest-lived tunas. Atlantic bluefin tuna can live for up to 50 years, with many adults caught at around 10 years of age. Pacific bluefin tuna reach maturity at about five years old and have an average lifespan of around 15 years. Southern bluefin tuna are often caught as juveniles, between two and three years of age, but they do not reach sexual maturity until they are between 9 and 12 years old. This species can live for up to 40 years.
