Common snapping turtles typically live for 30 to 45 years in their natural habitats. Some wild individuals can exceed 100 years. In captivity, they can live over 50 years.
Alligator snapping turtles’ wild lifespan ranges from 11 to 45 years, with some estimates suggesting 80 to 120 years, or even up to 200 years, though definitive evidence for extreme ages in the wild is limited. In captivity, they commonly reach 20 to 70 years, with one individual reportedly living to 150.

Estimating the age of snapping turtles often involves examining the annuli, or growth rings, found on their scutes, the bony plates covering their shell.
