Common and striped dolphins generally have shorter lifespans, usually ranging from 20 to 30 years in the wild.

Orcas, often referred to as killer whales, are the largest members of the dolphin family and exhibit the longest lifespans. Female orcas in the wild can live for more than 90 years, with an average lifespan of 50 to 80 years. Male orcas typically live for a shorter duration, averaging 30 to 50 years. In managed care environments, the lifespans of both bottlenose dolphins and orcas tend to be shorter than their wild counterparts.

While GLG analysis is the primary method, other less invasive techniques provide age estimations, particularly for wild populations. Photographic identification involves tracking individual dolphins over extended periods, noting their appearance and associations, to infer age based on observed growth and maturity.
