Other species, such as the harvester ant (Messor barbarus) queen, typically live around 15 years. This longevity is crucial for the colony’s long-term survival, as the queen is the primary source of new eggs.

Worker ants, which are sterile females, have significantly shorter lifespans compared to queens. Their longevity varies widely depending on the species and the demanding tasks they perform. Some worker ants may live for only a few months, while larger species like carpenter ants can live for up to seven years. These ants are responsible for foraging for food, maintaining the nest, caring for the young, and defending the colony. These roles expose them to numerous dangers, contributing to their shorter lives.

Male ants, also known as drones, have the briefest existence within the ant colony. Their sole purpose is to mate with a queen during the nuptial flight. After fulfilling this reproductive role, male ants typically die within a few days to a few weeks. In some cases, drones not selected for mating may survive up to seven days after reaching maturity.

Factors Influencing Ant Lifespan

Several factors influence how long an individual ant lives, extending beyond its caste. The species of ant is a primary determinant, as different species have varying biological lifespans. For example, some fire ant workers may live only about five weeks, while odorous house ant workers can live two to three years.

Environmental conditions play a significant role in ant longevity. Factors such as temperature, humidity, and the availability of food and water directly impact ant survival. Colonies with consistent access to resources and a stable environment tend to support longer-lived individuals.

The overall health and size of the colony also influence individual lifespans. Conversely, scarcity of food can shorten an ant’s life, as workers may eat less to ensure the queen and larvae are fed. The Ancient History of Ants

They belong to the order Hymenoptera, which also includes bees and wasps, and are believed to have evolved from a lineage of stinging wasps. This evolutionary transition occurred during the Cretaceous period, with the earliest ants emerging approximately 140 million years ago.

Fossil evidence provides direct insights into their ancient presence. The oldest known ant fossils date back to the mid-Cretaceous, around 113 to 100 million years ago. One significant discovery, Sphecomyrma freyi, found preserved in amber from the Cretaceous period, was initially estimated to be about 100 million years old, later revised to around 80 million years.

This fossil showed a mosaic of ant and wasp traits, providing a link between contemporary ants and their non-social wasp ancestors. More recently, a 113-million-year-old “hell ant” (Haidomyrmecinae) fossil preserved in limestone from Brazil has been identified as the oldest ant specimen known. These early ants were not always abundant, remaining relatively rare until about 50 million years ago, after which they diversified and became a dominant insect group.
