While lantana can survive periods of dryness, consistent and appropriate watering practices are necessary to encourage robust growth and prolific flowering. Understanding the shift in water needs from a newly planted specimen to a mature shrub is the primary step in successful lantana care.
Watering Schedules for Lantana
Watering frequency is determined by the plant’s stage of development. Newly planted lantana must be kept consistently moist for the first two to four weeks to allow the root system to establish itself in the surrounding soil. This initial phase requires watering daily or every other day, ensuring the root ball does not dry out without becoming waterlogged.
Once established, usually after the first month, the watering schedule should transition to deep, infrequent soakings. Mature lantana plants are highly drought-tolerant and perform best when the top few inches of soil are allowed to dry out completely between applications. A thorough watering once every one to two weeks during the growing season is sufficient for in-ground plants. This deep saturation encourages the roots to grow downward, making the plant more resilient to drought.
The goal is to water deeply enough to penetrate the entire root zone, rather than providing shallow, daily sprinkles that only encourage surface root development. Check the soil moisture by inserting a finger a couple of inches deep. If the soil at that depth feels dry to the touch, it is time for a thorough watering.
Environmental Factors Requiring Adjustment
The watering schedule must be altered based on the plant’s specific growing environment and local conditions. Lantana in containers dries out much faster than those planted in the ground due to increased air exposure and limited soil volume. During periods of high heat, containerized lantana may require daily watering to prevent desiccation, while in-ground plants remain adequately hydrated.
Soil composition affects water retention; lantana requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Heavy clay or poorly draining soil necessitates reducing watering frequency, as water takes longer to dissipate and can suffocate the roots. If the soil remains soggy for more than a day, frequency must be reduced immediately, or drainage must be improved.
Seasonal and climate changes dictate adjustments throughout the year. Frequency must increase during peak summer heat and dry spells because high temperatures increase evapotranspiration rates. Conversely, during dormancy in winter or cooler months, watering should be reduced or stopped entirely, as the plant’s metabolic processes slow down.

A lantana’s appearance provides clear visual cues when its watering regimen is incorrect, allowing for correction before permanent damage.
