Once the plants mature and begin to flower and set fruit, the goal shifts to deeper, less frequent watering. This typically translates to a thorough soaking every two to three days under average conditions to encourage deep root growth. In the peak heat of summer, high temperatures may necessitate a return to daily watering to keep the root zone consistently moist.
Essential Watering Techniques
When watering, the technique is as important as the timing, focusing on delivering moisture deep into the soil. The goal is to soak the root zone to a depth of eight to ten inches, which encourages the plant to develop a robust, drought-tolerant root system. Applying water slowly allows it to permeate the soil fully instead of running off the surface.
Always direct the water stream to the base of the plant, soaking the soil directly and avoiding the foliage. Wet leaves are a prime environment for fungal diseases, such as early blight, to take hold and spread rapidly. The most beneficial time to water is in the early morning, which minimizes water loss to evaporation and ensures the plant is hydrated before the heat of the day.
