The frequency of watering an indoor lavender plant is determined by the specific condition of its soil, not a calendar schedule. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline in potted lavender, often leading to fungal diseases like root rot. Allow the soil to dry out significantly between deep waterings.
To assess soil moisture accurately, use the finger test, inserting a finger one to two inches deep into the potting medium. If the soil at this depth feels completely dry, water the plant thoroughly until it drains freely from the bottom of the pot. During the active growing season, this may occur every seven to fourteen days, depending on environmental factors.
During the winter months, when the plant naturally enters a period of slower growth, reduce the watering frequency substantially. Continuously saturated soil displaces air pockets, suffocating the roots which require oxygen. Allowing the soil to nearly dry out completely before rewatering simulates the plant’s natural dry habitat and encourages robust root health.
The Importance of Fast-Draining Soil
Lavender requires a potting mix that rapidly sheds excess moisture. Traditional commercial potting mixes often contain high amounts of peat moss, making them unsuitable for this drought-tolerant herb. Prolonged moisture retention is detrimental and can lead to root rot.
The ideal container medium should be a gritty, well-aerated blend, achieved by amending standard potting soil with inorganic materials. The material of the planter itself is another major variable in the drying process. Unglazed terracotta pots are porous, allowing water vapor to escape through the sides, which helps the soil dry out faster. In contrast, non-porous plastic or glazed ceramic containers retain moisture longer, necessitating a more cautious and less frequent watering approach.
Recognizing Symptoms of Watering Issues
Both overwatering and underwatering can cause the plant to droop. Overwatering typically manifests first as a general yellowing of the lower leaves. If the issue is advanced, the plant base may feel mushy, and the soil surface might show signs of mold or a damp, unpleasant odor.
Conversely, an underwatered lavender plant will exhibit leaves that are dry and brittle, often with brown or crispy edges. The plant will also droop, but the foliage will feel stiff rather than soft. In cases of severe dehydration, the potting medium may shrink noticeably, pulling away from the inner edge of the container.
Differentiating between the two causes of drooping requires checking the soil: soft, wet soil indicates excess water, while a dry, hard soil mass points to simple thirst.
