Typical Feeding Habits
House spiders do not adhere to a strict daily feeding schedule. They are opportunistic predators, meaning they eat when prey is available rather than at set intervals. If insects are abundant, a house spider may eat frequently, potentially consuming prey up to four times per day. Conversely, if food sources are scarce, these spiders can go for extended periods without a meal. Their feeding frequency is highly flexible, adapting to the availability of insects in their environment.
Spiders possess a low metabolic rate, which allows them to conserve energy efficiently. They do not require constant sustenance. They can survive for weeks without food, relying on their stored energy reserves.
Diet and Hunting Methods
House spiders are carnivorous, primarily preying on insects and other small arthropods commonly found indoors. Their diet typically includes flies, mosquitoes, ants, moths, and even other spiders. Some larger house spiders may also consume cockroaches or other sizable insects.
Many common house spiders employ web-building as their primary hunting strategy. They construct tangled, irregular webs, often referred to as cobwebs, in secluded areas. These webs act as sticky traps, ensnaring unsuspecting prey that wander into them.
Once prey is caught in the web, the spider detects its struggles through vibrations transmitted along the silk threads. The spider then quickly moves to immobilize the prey, typically by biting it to inject venom and often wrapping it in silk.
Variables Affecting Feeding Frequency
The most significant factor influencing a house spider’s feeding frequency is the availability of prey. When there are many insects, spiders will eat more often; conversely, fewer insects lead to less frequent meals.
Ambient temperature also plays a role in a spider’s metabolic rate. In colder conditions, a spider’s metabolism slows down, reducing its energy expenditure and allowing it to survive longer between meals. Warmer temperatures can increase metabolic activity, prompting more frequent feeding.
A spider’s size and age influence its nutritional requirements. Growing spiders, particularly juveniles, need to eat more frequently to support their development and molting processes. Larger spiders have more stored energy reserves, which can allow them to go longer without food compared to smaller individuals. Additionally, the reproductive status of a female spider can increase her food demands, especially when producing eggs.
How Long They Can Survive Without Food
House spiders can endure extended periods without food. Smaller house spiders survive for about two to four weeks without a meal. Larger species may last even longer, with some capable of going several months without eating. Spiders still require access to water, often obtaining it from their prey or environmental humidity.
