Dung beetles, found tending to animal waste, are remarkable insects. These small creatures, belonging to the Scarabaeidae family, play a role in maintaining healthy ecosystems worldwide. Their physical capabilities allow them to perform feats that might seem impossible for their size.

The Astonishing Strength of Dung Beetles

Some species, notably the male Onthophagus taurus, can pull 1,141 times their own body weight. Beneath this tough exterior, dung beetles possess dense muscle fibers. Their powerful legs, particularly the forelegs, are adapted for digging and pushing, enabling them to exert significant force. When rolling a dung ball, the beetle often walks backward, using its front legs to push off the ground while its middle and hind legs step on and help maneuver the ball. This coordinated movement, combined with their low center of gravity, helps them maintain balance while handling objects much larger than themselves.

The Purpose Behind the Prowess

Dung beetles utilize their strength for several behaviors tied to their survival and reproduction. A primary use involves collecting and transporting animal dung, which serves as food for adults and a nursery for young. They shape dung into balls, which can be up to 10 times their weight, and then move these balls to a suitable burial site.

Digging burrows to bury the dung balls is another strength-intensive activity. These subterranean chambers protect the dung from predators and desiccation, ensuring a safe environment for their eggs and developing larvae. Competition for resources and mates also drives their displays of strength. Male dung beetles often engage in physical contests, using their powerful bodies to fight rivals over access to females and prime dung resources. These behaviors are important for their life cycle and contribute to ecosystem health through nutrient recycling, soil aeration, and natural pest control.
