Different crops have unique water needs, quantified by a crop coefficient, which changes significantly from the plant’s initial establishment phase to maturity. Soil properties, particularly water retention capacity, dictate how frequently water must be applied to keep the roots sufficiently moist.

Surface water resources are similarly strained, as large-scale diversions for irrigation severely reduce river and stream flows downstream. This reduction destabilizes aquatic ecosystems, destroys wetlands, and limits water availability for other users.

Water Quality Degradation
