The weight of an albatross can vary, ranging from 5.9 to 12.7 kilograms (13 to 28 pounds) across different species. Among the largest, the Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) weighs between 6 and 12 kilograms (13 to 26 pounds). Most adult albatrosses fall within this range, though some large adult males of the Wandering Albatross can exceed 11 kilograms (24 pounds).
Factors Influencing Albatross Weight
Several factors influence albatross weight. Individual weight can fluctuate based on sex, with males generally weighing more than females across many albatross species. For instance, male Wandering Albatrosses often average between 9.11 and 11.09 kilograms (20.1 to 24.4 pounds), whereas females typically range from 7.27 to 9.1 kilograms (16 to 20 pounds).
Age also plays a role in an albatross’s weight. Immature birds can be heavier than their parents during initial flights, retaining fat reserves before fledging. Chicks may also surpass adult weight prior to leaving the nest. Breeding cycles also influence weight, with individuals often decreasing in body mass during incubation. Food availability can lead to short-term weight fluctuations.
