The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is the most widely recognized dolphin species across the globe, inhabiting temperate and tropical waters worldwide. Its adult body mass varies significantly based on its specific habitat and population. A fully grown bottlenose dolphin can weigh between 300 and 1,400 pounds, a broad range reflecting major physical differences between distinct groups. This variation in size is a direct result of environmental factors and life history traits that influence growth.

Typical Adult Mass and Length

The mass of an adult bottlenose dolphin is highly variable. Their length is closely correlated with this weight, typically measuring between 6.6 and 12.8 feet (2 to 3.9 meters). The maximum size recorded for an individual can reach up to 13.5 feet in length and 1,400 pounds in weight, usually found in colder environments like the Eastern North Atlantic.

Size differences are largely dictated by the dolphin’s specific ecotype, defined by whether it inhabits coastal or offshore waters. The coastal ecotype, which prefers warmer, shallower waters, is generally the smaller morphotype. These dolphins typically weigh between 419 and 573 pounds and average about 8.5 feet in length.

The offshore ecotype, which lives in deeper, cooler waters, exhibits a much larger body size. These larger dolphins commonly reach an average weight of about 1,000 pounds and lengths of up to 12 feet. Within any population, sexual dimorphism also plays a role, as adult males are typically larger and heavier than adult females.

Weight at Birth and Growth Rate

A newborn bottlenose dolphin calf typically weighs between 22 and 44 pounds (10 to 20 kilograms) and measures between 2.7 and 4.6 feet in length. The calf’s initial growth is rapid, sustained entirely by the mother’s highly rich milk.

The nursing period is a time of intense weight gain and can last for 18 months to two years. The calf may begin supplementing its diet with fish around three to four months of age.

Bottlenose dolphins continue to grow until they reach physical maturity, which generally occurs between 12 and 15 years of age for both sexes. Females often grow at a faster initial rate than males but reach their asymptotic adult size earlier. Males experience a prolonged growth period, especially during puberty, which ultimately results in their larger final body mass and length.

Biological Influences on Body Size

One major influence is Bergmann’s Rule, an ecogeographical concept that states that animals in colder climates tend to be larger to conserve body heat. The larger offshore ecotype, living in cooler, open ocean environments, possesses a higher body volume relative to its surface area.

This larger size minimizes heat loss, a function aided by a thicker layer of blubber, which acts as insulation. Conversely, the smaller coastal dolphins inhabit warmer waters, where the need for insulation is lower, allowing for a smaller, more maneuverable body structure. The differences in size are significant enough that the two ecotypes may eventually be classified as separate species.

Diet and caloric intake also directly influence the final accumulated body mass. Offshore dolphins may face conditions with more patchy food resources, and a larger body size allows for longer, deeper dives to hunt prey, sustaining their greater mass. Sexual dimorphism is believed to be a result of male-male competition for mates, favoring individuals with greater size and strength.
