Stegosaurus, an iconic dinosaur from the Late Jurassic period, is recognized for its distinctive kite-shaped plates along its back and sharp spikes on its tail. This herbivorous giant roamed what is now western North America approximately 155 to 145 million years ago. Its impressive size, particularly its estimated weight, remains a frequent point of interest for many. Understanding its scale helps to visualize its presence in prehistoric ecosystems.
The Estimated Weight of a Stegosaurus
An adult Stegosaurus typically weighed between 3 and 7 metric tons (6,600 to 15,400 pounds). Some larger individuals, particularly of the species Stegosaurus ungulatus, may have reached over 5 metric tons (over 11,000 pounds). An adult Stegosaurus measured approximately 6.5 to 9 meters (21 to 30 feet) in length. Its height, measured to the hip, could reach around 2.7 to 4 meters (9 to 13 feet), giving it a tall, arched profile. One well-studied young adult specimen of Stegosaurus stenops, nicknamed Sophie, was estimated to weigh approximately 1,560 kilograms (about 1.6 metric tons or 3,530 pounds).
How Scientists Estimate Dinosaur Weight
Paleontologists employ several methods to estimate the body mass of extinct dinosaurs like Stegosaurus. One technique involves skeletal reconstruction and volumetric modeling. Scientists first reconstruct a complete skeleton, then digitally “flesh out” the animal by adding soft tissue layers based on modern animals with similar body plans. The volume of this 3D model is then calculated, and by applying estimated tissue densities, researchers can derive a body mass.
Another approach is scaling laws, also known as allometry. This technique relies on relationships observed between bone dimensions, such as the circumference of limb bones like the femur and humerus, and body mass in living animals. By measuring these load-bearing bones in dinosaur fossils, paleontologists can extrapolate the likely weight. A young adult, for instance, would weigh less than a fully grown individual.

Many dinosaur fossils are incomplete, requiring paleontologists to infer missing parts, which can introduce variability in reconstructions.
