Thinning is the most important step in growing radishes, as neglecting it results in competition that prevents the edible root from forming. Competition for light, water, and nutrients causes the plants to expend energy on leafy growth rather than developing a bulb, leading to radishes that are small, tough, and overly pungent.

Thinning should occur once the seedlings have developed their first set of true leaves, typically about a week after germination. The final, permanent spacing between the remaining plants should be approximately 2 to 3 inches, depending on the variety’s mature size. Radishes prefer full sun (at least six hours of direct sunlight per day), but as cool-season crops, they struggle in heat. Temperatures exceeding 80 degrees Fahrenheit can trigger the plant to bolt, or prematurely flower, resulting in a woody, bitter root.
