The scientific name for the Amazon river dolphin is Inia geoffrensis, though they are commonly known as botos or pink river dolphins. These dolphins possess a flexible neck, allowing them to turn their heads nearly 90 degrees, a feature that aids their navigation through submerged trees and dense underwater vegetation. Their pink coloration is perhaps their most striking feature, though they are born grey and gradually acquire their pink or pinkish-grey tones as they mature. Several factors contribute to this unique coloration, including the proximity of capillaries to the skin, age, diet (potentially from carotenoids in their food), and activity levels. Scar tissue from interactions with other dolphins also plays a role, with older males often displaying a more vivid pink due to aggressive encounters and accumulated scarring.
