How Many mL of DayQuil Should I Take Per Dose?

The standard adult dose of DayQuil liquid is 30 mL every 4 hours, with a maximum of 4 doses in 24 hours. That means your daily cap is 120 mL total. These numbers apply to both DayQuil Cold & Flu and DayQuil Severe liquid formulations, and they cover anyone 12 years or older.

Adult and Teen Dosing

If you’re 12 or older, take 30 mL every 4 hours as needed. Don’t take a fifth dose, even if the 24-hour window isn’t quite up. Four doses, spaced at least 4 hours apart, is the hard limit.

Use the dose cup that comes in the box. Household spoons (teaspoons, tablespoons) vary too much in actual volume. Kitchen spoons can easily deliver more or less than intended, which matters when you’re working with a medicine that contains multiple active ingredients.

Children’s Dosing

DayQuil Kids (the berry-flavored formula made for younger children) uses a different dose: 15 mL every 4 hours for children 6 to under 12 years old, still capped at 4 doses per day. Children 4 to under 6 should only take it if a doctor recommends it, and children under 4 should not use it at all.

For children’s doses, an oral syringe is more accurate than a dosing cup. Measurement errors are about 4 times more likely with a cup than with a syringe, especially at smaller volumes. If the product comes with a cup, you can ask a pharmacist for a syringe instead.

What’s in Each 30 mL Dose

A single 30 mL adult dose of DayQuil Severe contains 650 mg of acetaminophen (the pain reliever and fever reducer in Tylenol), 20 mg of a cough suppressant, 400 mg of an expectorant to loosen mucus, and 10 mg of a nasal decongestant. The regular Cold & Flu version has the same dose volume but may contain slightly different active ingredients depending on the specific product, so check the label.

The acetaminophen content is the number worth paying attention to. At 4 doses a day, you’re taking 2,600 mg of acetaminophen just from DayQuil. The safe daily maximum for acetaminophen across all sources is 4,000 mg. That leaves limited room for anything else that contains it.

Why Acetaminophen Overlap Matters

Acetaminophen is in a surprising number of products: Tylenol, NyQuil, Excedrin, many prescription pain medications, and dozens of store-brand cold remedies. If you’re taking DayQuil during the day and switching to NyQuil at night, both contain acetaminophen, and the totals add up fast.

Too much acetaminophen causes liver damage. The early symptoms of an overdose, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain, can look a lot like the cold or flu you’re already dealing with. In some cases, symptoms take several days to show up, or don’t appear at all until serious damage has occurred. Severe overdoses can lead to liver failure.

Before taking DayQuil alongside any other medication, read the Drug Facts label on everything you’re using and add up the acetaminophen. If you drink three or more alcoholic beverages a day or have a history of liver problems, the risk of liver damage from acetaminophen goes up significantly.
