Propane is a common fuel source used for everything from home heating to grilling. While it is routinely sold and measured by weight in pounds, the fuel is stored and used as a compressed liquid, meaning its practical volume is measured in gallons. This difference requires a precise conversion to understand the liquid volume contained within a given weight, which is relevant for safe handling and accurate tank filling.

The Standard Liquid Propane Conversion

The conversion between the weight and volume of liquid propane relies on a standard density measurement. At the industry-standard temperature of 60°F, one gallon of liquid propane weighs approximately 4.2 pounds. This figure is used for most commercial and safety calculations to ensure consistency.

To determine the volume of a single pound of propane, the inverse calculation is used. Specifically, one pound of liquid propane contains approximately 0.237 gallons. Factors That Affect Propane Density

The standard conversion is only an approximation because propane’s density is highly sensitive to temperature changes. This means the physical volume of one pound of propane changes based on the liquid’s temperature.

This 20% cushion, or vapor space, prevents dangerous pressure buildup if the liquid propane heats up and expands significantly.
