The process of laying eggs, known as oviposition, involves the female fly depositing her eggs in a location that will provide immediate sustenance for the developing larvae. Flies typically lay their small, white, oval-shaped eggs in moist, decaying organic matter. This can include materials such as food waste, animal feces, compost, or carrion.

Once laid, the eggs hatch rapidly, typically within 8 to 24 hours, depending on factors like temperature and humidity. The emerging organisms are legless, pale-whitish larvae, commonly known as maggots. These maggots immediately begin to feed on the surrounding organic material where they were laid.
