Anaphase involves the separation of the sister chromatids. The centromere of each duplicated chromosome splits, and the individual chromatids are pulled toward opposite ends of the cell by spindle fibers. In telophase, a new nuclear envelope forms around each set of chromosomes at the cell’s poles. The chromosomes decondense, and the cell prepares for division.

Mitosis is called “equational division” because it results in daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell. Each daughter cell receives an exact copy of the parent cell’s genetic material.

For instance, if a human parent cell begins with 46 chromosomes, each resulting daughter cell will also contain 46 chromosomes. This consistent chromosome number is maintained because DNA replication before mitosis ensures each chromosome has two identical copies. During anaphase, these sister chromatids separate, with one copy going to each new cell, preserving the original chromosome count.
