Achieving a lush, full container display requires a precise calculation of planting density to ensure the plants have adequate space to thrive without being overcrowded. The final count will differ dramatically based on whether you are using compact bedding varieties or larger, showier types.

Understanding Begonia Growth Habits

Determining planting density starts with identifying the begonia’s growth habit, which falls into two main categories. The smaller, mounding varieties, known as fibrous-rooted or wax begonias, are compact with succulent stems. They typically reach a mature height and spread of six to twelve inches. Their dense, bushy growth allows them to be planted closer together to create a solid mass of color.

The second major type includes tuberous and Rieger begonias, which are significantly larger and more dramatic. For hanging baskets, a slightly higher density is acceptable to ensure the sides are quickly covered, as they are viewed from below. A twelve-inch hanging basket designed for cascading tuberous types should be limited to three plants positioned evenly around the edge. The same twelve-inch basket used for mounding fibrous begonias could hold four to five plants, with one positioned centrally to create a full, rounded effect.

Maximizing Container Performance

The limited soil volume requires a high-quality, well-draining potting mix, as garden soil is too dense and can retain excessive moisture, leading to root rot.
