Beekeepers commonly assess honeybee colony strength by visually estimating “frames of bees.” This involves judging how many frames within the hive are covered by bees, with one deep Langstroth frame potentially holding around 2,000 bees per side. This visual assessment provides a practical gauge of colony size and health.

Another method for honeybee hives is weighing the entire hive, as weight correlates with bee population. Since an individual bee weighs approximately 0.1 grams, changes in hive weight indicate population shifts. Researchers also count foraging bees entering and leaving the hive over a period to estimate overall colony size.
