Gopher Litter Size
A female gopher’s litter size can vary, typically ranging from one to ten young, with most litters averaging three to seven pups. While some sources report an average of three to four young per litter, others indicate five to six is more common across various gopher species. These tiny newborns, often referred to as pups, are born in secure underground burrows. At birth, gopher pups are hairless, blind, and entirely dependent on their mother for warmth, nourishment, and protection. Their eyes and ears remain closed for several weeks.
Reproductive Frequency
Gophers have a relatively short gestation period, typically lasting around three to four weeks. The frequency of reproduction in gophers varies significantly depending on their geographical location and environmental conditions. Gophers in northern regions generally produce one litter per year, whereas those in southern areas may have two litters annually. In highly favorable environments, such as irrigated alfalfa fields, gophers can breed almost continuously, producing up to three or even nearly four litters within a year.
Young gophers are typically nursed by their mother for about two months before they are weaned. After this period, the young pups disperse from their natal burrow to establish their own individual tunnel systems and territories. They usually reach sexual maturity around one year of age.
