Once a spot is found, the male deposits the spermatophore. He then maneuvers the female over it for internal fertilization. After this transfer, the pair usually separates. Following successful fertilization, the female undergoes a gestation period that can range from several months to over a year, depending on the species.

The number of offspring a female scorpion produces varies significantly by species, from one to over one hundred young. Some species have smaller broods, while others, like certain bark scorpions, are known for larger litters. For instance, the striped bark scorpion (Centruroides vittatus) typically gives birth to an average of 31 young, with a range of 13 to 47.
The average litter size across various species is often cited around 25, though it can extend up to 100 or more. This wide range highlights the diverse reproductive strategies employed by different scorpion species to ensure offspring survival in varied environments. Each species has evolved a brood size suited to its ecological niche and available resources.
From Birth to Independence: Maternal Care
Scorpions are viviparous, meaning they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs. Newborns, called “scorplings,” are soft-bodied, white, and enveloped in a thin membrane. Immediately after birth, they instinctively climb onto their mother’s back, remaining there for protection and their first molts.
This maternal care period typically lasts between 10 to 20 days, during which the scorplings are vulnerable and rely on their mother. They cannot feed or sting effectively until their exoskeletons harden after this initial molt. Once their bodies become harder and more pigmented, they descend from their mother’s back, becoming independent and hunting on their own.
