The pot’s size plays a role, with larger containers requiring more time for water to wick up through the soil. The plant’s size and type also influence absorption speed; larger plants with more foliage absorb water more quickly due to increased transpiration.
Soil composition is another important factor; well-draining mixes with perlite or coarse sand saturate faster than dense, heavy soils. The current dryness of the soil is a primary determinant; extremely parched soil takes longer to rehydrate thoroughly compared to slightly dry soil. The pot’s material can also affect the process, as porous materials like terracotta pots absorb some water themselves, influencing the overall duration.
Signs of Sufficient Hydration
Observing specific cues indicates when a plant has absorbed enough water. The most common sign is when the top layer of soil becomes visibly moist to the touch. Confirm its dampness by gently pressing your finger into the soil.
Another reliable indicator is the pot’s weight; a fully saturated pot feels noticeably heavier than a dry one. As the soil absorbs water, you might initially see small bubbles rising from the drainage holes, signifying air being displaced. When these bubbles cease, it suggests the soil is fully saturated and absorption has slowed. After observing these signs, promptly remove the plant from the water bath and allow any excess water to drain completely.
Optimizing Your Bottom Watering Routine
Incorporating bottom watering into your plant care routine involves more than just soaking. Determining when a plant needs watering again is best done by regularly checking the soil dryness with your finger or a moisture meter. Bottom watering changes the method of hydration, not necessarily the frequency; plants still need water based on their specific needs and environmental conditions.
Using room-temperature water is recommended to avoid shocking the plant’s roots. If your tap water contains high levels of chlorine or other chemicals, allowing it to sit out overnight or using filtered water can be beneficial for sensitive plants.
While bottom watering is effective, it does not flush out mineral salts that can accumulate in the soil from fertilizers and tap water. Therefore, it is advisable to occasionally top water your plants until water drains from the bottom, every few waterings, to prevent this buildup.
Bottom watering may not be suitable for plants highly susceptible to root rot in consistently moist conditions, or those that prefer their soil to dry out significantly between waterings.
