How Long Is Zofran Good For Before It Expires?

Zofran (ondansetron) tablets have a manufacturer shelf life of five years from the date of production. The expiration date printed on your specific bottle or blister pack reflects this timeline, and that date is the most reliable guide for whether your medication is still good to use. How you store it, and which form you have, can shorten that window considerably.

Shelf Life by Form

The standard film-coated tablet has the longest shelf life at five years. This applies to both brand-name Zofran and generic ondansetron tablets, assuming the package stays sealed and properly stored.

The oral solution (liquid Zofran) is a different story. Once you break the seal on a bottle of ondansetron syrup, it should be used within 28 days. After that, the liquid may begin to degrade even if it looks and smells normal. If you only use liquid Zofran occasionally for nausea, write the date you opened the bottle somewhere visible on the label so you don’t lose track.

Orally disintegrating tablets (Zofran ODT) come individually sealed in foil blisters for a reason: they’re designed to dissolve on contact with moisture. Once you peel open a blister, the tablet should go on your tongue immediately. There’s no safe window to leave an unwrapped ODT sitting out. Don’t push the tablet through the foil backing either, as that can damage it. Peel the foil with dry hands and place the tablet directly on your tongue.

Storage Conditions That Matter

Zofran tablets should be stored at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C), which is standard room temperature. The medication is also light-sensitive, so it should stay in a tight, light-resistant container. The original pharmacy bottle or blister packaging meets this requirement. Transferring tablets into a clear daily pill organizer for extended periods isn’t ideal, especially if that organizer sits on a sunny countertop or in a warm bathroom.

Heat and humidity are the biggest threats. A medicine cabinet in a steamy bathroom, a car glove compartment in summer, or a kitchen shelf near the stove can all push temperatures well above the recommended range. Repeated exposure to heat doesn’t just shorten the shelf life on paper. It can actively break down the medication’s active ingredient, leaving you with a tablet that won’t work when you need it most.

Can You Use Zofran After It Expires?

Expired Zofran is unlikely to be dangerous, but it may not be effective. Most medications lose potency gradually after their expiration date rather than becoming toxic. The concern with an anti-nausea medication like Zofran is practical: if you’re taking it to manage vomiting from chemotherapy, pregnancy, or a stomach virus, a tablet that’s lost significant potency defeats the purpose.

A tablet that expired a few weeks ago and was stored properly is a very different situation from one that expired two years ago and spent a summer in your car. The closer you are to the printed date and the better your storage conditions have been, the more likely the medication still works as intended.

Signs Your Zofran May Have Gone Bad

Tablets that have crumbled, changed color, or developed an unusual smell should not be used. For the liquid form, look for cloudiness, floating particles, or any change in color from the original clear solution. If the container itself is damaged, cracked, or wasn’t properly sealed, discard the medication regardless of the expiration date.

That said, many degraded tablets look perfectly normal. The absence of visible changes doesn’t guarantee full potency, which is why the expiration date and proper storage matter more than a visual check alone.

Keeping Zofran Effective as Long as Possible

  • Store tablets in their original container at room temperature, away from direct light and moisture.
  • Keep the liquid form refrigerated or at room temperature per your pharmacist’s instructions, and discard 28 days after opening.
  • Leave ODT blisters sealed until the moment you’re ready to take a dose.
  • Avoid bathroom medicine cabinets if your bathroom gets humid during showers. A bedroom drawer or closet shelf is a better choice.
  • Check expiration dates at least once or twice a year and replace expired stock, especially if you keep Zofran on hand for occasional use rather than daily dosing.
