Germination begins when the seed is sown and ends when the root radical emerges and the sprout breaks the soil surface. Under favorable conditions, tomato seeds typically take five to ten days to germinate, though this can extend up to two weeks in cooler environments. The final step before planting outdoors is a controlled process called “hardening off,” which prepares the indoor plant for the realities of the garden. Growth Habit

The plant’s growth habit also influences the harvest window. Tomato varieties are classified as either determinate or indeterminate. Determinate varieties grow to a set height and produce their entire crop of fruit all at once, often over a one- to two-week period, which makes them suitable for processing large batches of sauce. Indeterminate varieties, conversely, continue to grow, flower, and set new fruit continuously until the first hard frost, providing a steady supply throughout the season.

Environmental Factors
