Select the largest, healthiest cloves from a bulb, as bigger planting material generally yields bigger bulbs at harvest. Separate each clove gently from the main bulb just before planting, keeping the papery wrapper intact to protect the developing sprout. The pointed end of the clove is oriented upward, and the flat, root end is pushed two to three inches deep into loose, well-draining soil.
