This transition to the first pinnate or palmate fronds can take an additional one to three years. During this time, the palm thickens its base, developing the necessary width for the future trunk.
The final stabilization phase occurs as the palm develops a stable root ball and begins to form a recognizable trunk, a process called “stem initiation.” Reaching transplant size often requires five to ten years from the initial seed planting. While some fast-growing palms may form a trunk in five years, others, like the slow-growing Sabal species, might take decades to show significant height increase.
