Pinworm eggs are easily transferred from the perianal area to fingers, surfaces, and clothing. Therefore, frequent and thorough handwashing with soap and warm water is important, particularly after using the toilet, changing diapers, and before handling food.
Keeping fingernails short and clean can help prevent eggs from accumulating under them, and avoiding nail-biting or scratching the anal area reduces the risk of self-infection. Daily morning showers are preferred over baths, as showering helps wash away any eggs laid overnight without contaminating bathwater. While rare, treatment resistance can also be a factor, meaning the worms may not have responded as expected to the medication. A healthcare provider can conduct further evaluations, which might include another “Scotch tape test” to confirm the presence of pinworm eggs, and advise on alternative treatment options or further diagnostic steps if needed.
