Some varieties or slight deviations from ideal conditions might extend this period, occasionally pushing the timeline closer to 21 days. The speed of emergence is highly dependent on the environment provided to the seed.
The first visual sign of successful germination is the emergence of the cotyledon, which is the seed leaf. This often appears as a small, pale-green loop or crook pushing up through the soil surface. As the seedling matures, this loop straightens out, and the black seed husk may remain attached to the tip for a short time.
Key Environmental Factors Influencing Germination
Temperature is the most important variable controlling how quickly onion seeds sprout. The optimal soil temperature range for rapid germination is quite narrow, generally falling between 68 and 77°F (20–25°C). Maintaining temperatures within this warm window can encourage sprouting in as little as four to five days.
