Growth starts with the development of a robust root system to anchor the bulb and absorb moisture. Next, the flower stalk, known as the scape, emerges from the center of the bulb. The scape rapidly elongates, often preceding the appearance of the strap-like green leaves.
Bulbs that are pre-sprouted or “forced” by the supplier, such as those from the Southern Hemisphere, may bloom quicker (five to seven weeks). Why Your Amaryllis Isn’t Blooming
When an Amaryllis fails to bloom within the twelve-week window, the problem relates to the bulb’s internal reserves or improper planting technique. The most frequent cause is insufficient bulb size. The flower bud must be fully formed inside the bulb before planting, requiring a circumference of 26-28 centimeters or larger to reliably produce a flower stalk.

Maintaining an Amaryllis for future seasons requires a reblooming timeline that spans nearly a full year. After the flowers fade, cut the spent flower stalk (scape) one or two inches above the bulb, leaving the remaining leaves intact. These leaves are essential for photosynthesis, allowing the bulb to store the energy reserves needed for the next flower bud.
The bulb enters a summer growing phase lasting at least six to eight months, requiring consistent light, water, and periodic fertilization. In early autumn, induce dormancy by withholding water and moving the plant to a cool, dark location (50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit).
This chilling period must last a minimum of eight to twelve weeks to reset the bulb’s internal clock and trigger new flower bud formation.
