A mature plant will sometimes send up a tall stalk topped with yellow or orange tubular flowers, though this is less common for indoor specimens. Aloe vera does not simply die of old age; decline usually results from poor cultivation practices, such as overwatering, or from the metabolic demands of extensive reproduction.

Achieving maximum longevity requires recreating the dry, bright conditions of the plant’s natural environment. Providing adequate light is a primary factor, meaning the plant needs bright, indirect sunlight for most of the day.
