Mid-season varieties, such as Darwin Hybrids, are known for their strong stems and slightly longer bloom window, sometimes lasting up to two weeks under favorable circumstances. Late-season types, including Parrot and Lily-Flowered tulips, also offer a robust display. Cut tulips, when properly cared for in a vase, have an even shorter lifespan, typically lasting five to seven days before wilting begins.
Environmental Influences on Bloom Duration
Temperature is the most significant external factor governing a tulip’s bloom duration. Tulips thrive in cool spring weather, with ideal temperatures ranging between 45 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooler conditions slow down the plant’s metabolism, allowing the flower to last longer.
Conversely, a sudden spike in temperature, particularly above 70 degrees Fahrenheit, will drastically accelerate the bloom cycle. Warmer temperatures cause the flowers to open rapidly, or “blow,” resulting in a short but spectacular display that fades within just a few days. Sunlight exposure also plays a role; while tulips require full sun to develop properly, too much intense, direct afternoon sun during the bloom period can overheat the petals and hasten their decline.

Certain species tulips, closer to their wild origins, are more resilient to environmental fluctuations than highly hybridized cultivars.
