While rapid flu tests offer speed, other diagnostic methods provide different benefits, particularly in terms of accuracy. Molecular tests, such as reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests, are considered more sensitive and specific for detecting influenza. These tests work by identifying the genetic material of the virus, which allows for detection even when only small amounts of virus are present. However, samples for molecular tests are typically sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis.

This off-site processing means that results from molecular tests usually take longer to obtain, often several hours to a day or more, depending on the lab’s capacity. The trade-off between rapid tests and molecular tests lies in their balance of speed versus sensitivity. Rapid tests are valuable for their ability to provide quick answers, enabling timely treatment decisions, particularly in busy clinical settings. Molecular tests, despite their longer processing time, offer a higher degree of accuracy, making them useful for confirming diagnoses or when rapid test results are inconclusive.
