A notable disparity often exists between the lifespans of male and female spiders. Females generally live longer than their male counterparts. Male spiders frequently have shorter lives, sometimes dying shortly after mating, while females may survive to produce multiple egg sacs. For example, male wolf spiders often live for less than a year, whereas females can live for two to three years. A remarkable record for spider longevity belongs to a female trapdoor spider (Gaius villosus) named Number 16, which lived an estimated 43 years in Western Australia. This individual surpassed the previous record held by a 28-year-old tarantula. Her long life in a burrow provided protection from many environmental hazards. In contrast, common orb-weaver spiders typically have a lifespan of about 12 months, with females laying eggs in late summer or autumn and dying shortly after.
