The lifespan of spiders is a topic that often sparks curiosity, as these arachnids are found in diverse environments across the globe. While some spiders may only live for a few months, others can survive for several decades, a remarkable range that depends heavily on their species and surrounding conditions. This variability in longevity makes understanding their life cycles a fascinating subject.

How Long Do Spiders Live

The duration of a spider’s life varies considerably, ranging from a few months to several decades, primarily influenced by their specific species. Common house spiders, for instance, have a relatively short lifespan, living for about one to two years in indoor environments. Many garden spiders, such as the yellow garden spider or the Eurasian garden spider, complete their life cycle within a single year, often dying with the onset of cold weather. In warmer climates, some garden spiders might survive for up to three years.

Black widow spiders live for one to three years, and brown recluse spiders survive for one to two years. Wolf spiders show a clear difference between sexes, with males living less than a year, while females can persist for three years or more, sometimes reaching up to four years in captivity. Tarantulas have notably extended lifespans. Male tarantulas live about three to twelve years, but females can live ten to thirty years or even longer, with some individual females recorded to live up to forty years. Larger spider species tend to have a longer lifespan compared to their smaller counterparts.

What Affects a Spider’s Lifespan

Numerous factors contribute to variations observed in spider lifespans, extending beyond just the species type. Genetic predispositions, metabolic rates, and unique life history strategies inherent to each species play a substantial role. Larger spider species often possess slower metabolic rates and undergo delayed maturation, which contributes to their extended longevity.

Environmental conditions are equally influential. Temperature directly impacts a spider’s metabolic rate and development speed; warmer environments accelerate growth and maturation, potentially leading to shorter lifespans. Colder temperatures slow these biological processes, prolonging their lives. Humidity and the availability of water are also important, as desiccation poses a threat, particularly to smaller spiders, making adequate water essential for their survival.

Consistent food availability is another important factor for a spider’s survival and reproductive success. Spiders can endure extended periods without food, but they require water. If food becomes scarce, spiders may reduce their reproductive output to conserve energy, potentially extending their life, but prolonged food scarcity can still be detrimental. Predation by other animals, such as birds, larger insects, and other spiders, can shorten a spider’s life. Human activities, including the use of pesticides, also pose a threat to spider populations.

Sexual dimorphism also plays a role in lifespan differences, with female spiders generally outliving males. This disparity is partly due to the fact that male spiders often die shortly after mating, sometimes being consumed by the female. Additionally, males typically engage in more movement in search of mates, which increases their exposure to predators and other environmental risks.

The Oldest Spiders on Record

While many spiders have relatively short lives, certain species, particularly trapdoor spiders and tarantulas, are known for their longevity. The oldest spider ever recorded was a female trapdoor spider known as “Number 16.” This individual, a Gaius villosus from Australia, lived an estimated 43 years, having been observed and documented by researchers from 1974 until her death in 2016.

Despite her advanced age, Number 16 did not die of natural causes but was killed by a parasitic wasp. Her longevity was attributed to several life history traits, including her sedentary nature, low metabolism, and living in undisturbed native bushland. This trapdoor spider surpassed the previous record holder, a tarantula from Mexico that lived for 28 years. Beyond this record-breaker, many female tarantulas are known to live for extended periods, with some species, such as the Texas Tan Tarantula or Brazilian Black Tarantula, living up to 30 to 40 years in captivity.
