The journey of sperm from ejaculation to reaching an egg is a remarkable and intricate biological process. It involves overcoming numerous challenges within the female reproductive tract. The Sperm’s Journey

For most viable sperm, the journey through the uterus to the fallopian tubes takes several hours, often between 2 to 7 hours, and up to 24 to 48 hours. Sperm can survive within the female reproductive tract for an average of 2-3 days, and up to 5 to 7 days under optimal conditions, such as during the fertile window. This extended survival means conception can occur even if intercourse happens several days before ovulation, as sperm can wait for the egg to be released.

Fertilization occurs in the upper third of the fallopian tube. The egg, once ovulated, is only viable for fertilization for about 12 to 24 hours. Therefore, the timing of intercourse relative to ovulation is crucial, as sperm must be present when the egg is available.

Factors Influencing Sperm Travel
