In protected environments like captivity, they can often exceed 50 years, with some documented cases of individuals living over 100 years.
Alligator snapping turtles (Macrochelys temminckii) typically exhibit an even longer lifespan. In the wild, they usually live between 11 and 45 years, although some sources suggest they can live up to 70 years in captivity. There are even reports suggesting some individuals might be capable of living up to 200 years, though data supporting such extreme ages is limited.
Factors Influencing Their Longevity
Numerous environmental and biological factors significantly affect a snapping turtle’s lifespan. The quality of their habitat, including access to clean water, abundant food sources, and suitable nesting sites, plays a considerable role in their survival. Conversely, pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change can substantially reduce their years.

Distinguishing Snapping Turtle Species

Alligator snapping turtles are notably larger, often weighing hundreds of pounds, and possess heavily ridged shells with three distinct dorsal ridges. They also have a more pronounced hooked beak and a unique, worm-like lure on their tongue, used to attract prey.
In contrast, common snapping turtles are generally smaller, typically weighing between 10 and 35 pounds, and have smoother, rounded shells. Their beaks are less pointed, and they lack the tongue lure found in alligator snapping turtles. While young common snapping turtles may exhibit some ridges, these tend to become less apparent as they mature, unlike the persistent ridges on an alligator snapping turtle’s shell.
How Scientists Estimate Age
Scientists primarily estimate a turtle’s age by examining the growth rings, or annuli, on its scutes, which are the plates on its shell. Each year, during periods of growth, turtles typically add a new layer to their scutes, forming these rings. By counting these concentric stripes, researchers can approximate a turtle’s age, similar to counting tree rings.
However, this method has limitations; the rings can become less distinct or wear down as the turtle ages, making accurate counting challenging in older individuals.
