Scientists cut a thin cross-section of the bone and count the Lines of Arrested Growth (LAGs), which are similar to annual growth rings in trees. These dark, thin lines are presumed to form annually during periods of slow growth, often due to seasonal changes in temperature or food availability. However, this technique is not perfect, as bone remodeling can obscure early growth rings.

Long-term mark-recapture or tagging studies track individuals over time. While this approach cannot determine a turtle’s age upon first capture, it establishes a minimum lifespan for an individual. Combining these field observations with bone analysis allows researchers to build a comprehensive picture of sea turtle demography.

The Long Journey to Reproductive Maturity

The remarkably extended juvenile phase is a significant factor contributing to the overall longevity of sea turtles. They take a very long time to reach sexual maturity, a biological trait common among long-lived species. This period, often called the “lost years,” can last for one to three decades, depending on the species and population.

The age of maturity varies widely, even within the same species, due to environmental factors like food availability. The earliest maturing species, the Leatherback, may reach reproductive age between 7 and 15 years. The Green sea turtle, which is herbivorous, often takes the longest, requiring 26 to 40 years to reach maturity. Loggerheads generally mature between 20 and 35 years, while Hawksbills typically take around 20 to 25 years. External Factors That Influence Longevity

Their potential lifespan is heavily influenced by external pressures. Natural threats begin immediately after hatching, with over 90% of hatchlings falling victim to predation before reaching the safety of the open ocean. Adults have few natural predators, though large sharks are known to prey on them, and diseases like the tumor-causing condition fibropapillomatosis can reduce survival rates.

The most pervasive threats, however, come from human activities. Accidental capture in commercial fishing gear, known as bycatch, is a leading cause of premature death for adult and juvenile turtles. They become entangled in nets, lines, and trawls, which often results in drowning. Development and erosion destroy nesting beaches, limiting the ability of females to reproduce. Climate change presents a long-term threat by affecting the temperature of nesting sand, which determines the sex of the hatchlings. Warmer sands produce more females, potentially leading to a lack of male turtles over time.
