Environmental Variables That Influence Speed

The primary factor dictating the speed of emergence is the soil temperature. Radishes can be sown once the soil reaches 40°F, but the most rapid germination occurs between 55°F and 75°F. Within this range, the seed’s metabolic rate is maximized, allowing it to quickly utilize stored energy for growth.

If the soil temperature drops below 50°F, germination slows down considerably, prolonging the time it takes for the seedling to appear. Conversely, temperatures exceeding 80°F can also be problematic, potentially leading to bolting later in the plant’s life, which causes the radish to produce seed stalks rather than a desirable root.
