For instance, the black garden ant, Lasius niger, holds a record for the longest recorded adult insect life, with a queen living nearly 28 years in a controlled environment. This contrasts sharply with worker ants, which typically live for a few months to a few years, and male ants (drones), who often die within weeks.

While many ant queens live 5 to 15 years, some species, like carpenter ants, can live over 10 years in natural settings. This longevity allows a queen to lay thousands, or even millions, of eggs, continuously replenishing and expanding the colony. Her extended life supports the colony’s long-term stability and success.

Factors Influencing Longevity
