Pigeons are a common sight in urban and rural environments, known for their adaptability to human-modified landscapes. Their nesting habits are a crucial part of their life cycle, involving egg-laying and raising young. These birds establish nests in various sheltered locations, often mimicking their natural cliff-side habitats like building ledges and bridges. Understanding their nesting behaviors provides insight into how these birds thrive in diverse settings.

Key Stages of Pigeon Nesting

After mating, female pigeons typically lay one to two eggs, with incubation commencing once the second egg is laid. Both parents share incubation, with the female covering eggs from late afternoon through mid-morning and the male taking over during the day. This incubation period generally lasts 17 to 19 days.

Once hatched, young pigeons, known as squabs, are altricial, meaning they are born blind and mostly featherless, completely dependent on their parents. Parents feed squabs “pigeon milk,” a nutrient-rich secretion from their crops, for the first week or so. The nestling period, during which chicks remain in the nest, typically ranges from 25 to 32 days, though it can extend up to 45 days in colder conditions. During this time, squabs develop feathers, gain strength, and grow significantly, often reaching near adult size by the time they are ready to leave the nest. The entire nesting cycle, from egg-laying to fledging, generally spans approximately 6 to 7 weeks.

Variables Affecting Nesting Period

Several factors can influence the duration and success of a pigeon’s nesting period. Environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures or heavy rainfall, can impact nesting success. For instance, winter conditions can extend the nestling period for squabs.

The availability of food resources significantly affects the ability of parent pigeons to raise their young. Abundant food allows parents to adequately feed their chicks, supporting faster growth rates and potentially leading to a shorter nestling period. Conversely, food scarcity can lead to increased nestling mortality and a reduction in the number of successful broods. Predation and disturbances also play a role; threats from predators like cats, raptors, or corvids, or human interference, can cause parents to abandon nests or disrupt the nesting process. Such disruptions can lead to delays or complete failure of the nesting attempt.

From Nest to Independence

Fledging marks the stage when young pigeons leave the nest, typically 25 to 32 days after hatching. Although they have left the nest, these fledglings are not yet fully independent. Parents continue to provide care and feed them for a short period outside the nest, often for several days to a week, helping them hone their flying and foraging skills.

Pigeons are prolific breeders, capable of multiple nesting cycles, or broods, within a single year. In favorable conditions, a pair can raise five to six broods annually. This high frequency is due to the relatively short interval between broods; new eggs are often laid before the previous clutch has fully left the nest.
