Typical Jellyfish Lifespans
Most jellyfish species live for only a few months to about one year in their adult, free-swimming medusa stage. For instance, the cannonball jellyfish typically lives for just three to six months. The medusa stage is the final phase of their complex life cycle, during which they reproduce. While this stage is often brief, the preceding polyp stage, which is attached to a surface, can sometimes persist for much longer periods. Scientists often find it challenging to precisely determine the lifespan of wild jellyfish due to their transient nature and the vastness of their ocean habitats.
Lifespan Across Different Species
The lifespan of jellyfish can differ significantly from one species to another, depending on their size and specific life history. Moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) generally live for about 12 to 15 months in their medusa form. Their polyp stage, however, can endure for up to 25 years in controlled environments.
Sea nettles typically have a lifespan of about six months to one year in the wild. In protected settings like aquariums, some sea nettles have been observed to live for up to 18 months or even longer, potentially exceeding four years for Pacific sea nettles due to slower metabolism in colder waters.
The lion’s mane jellyfish, one of the largest jellyfish species, also has a relatively short adult lifespan, usually around one year. Despite their impressive size, which can reach bell diameters of over two meters with tentacles extending many meters, their life cycle completes within a single year.
What Influences Jellyfish Lifespan
Several environmental and biological factors influence how long a jellyfish lives. Water temperature plays a role, as warmer waters often accelerate their growth and reproductive cycles, potentially leading to shorter lives for some species. Conversely, colder temperatures can slow down their metabolism, potentially extending the lifespan of cold-water species. Food availability is another element; ample food resources support growth and reproduction, while scarcity can lead to starvation and a shortened life. Predation by marine animals like sea turtles, fish, and even other jellyfish species also impacts jellyfish populations and individual longevity. Among the diverse world of jellyfish, Turritopsis dohrnii stands out for its extraordinary ability, earning it the nickname “immortal jellyfish.” This species can revert to an earlier life stage after reaching sexual maturity. When faced with environmental stress, physical damage, or simply old age, the adult medusa can transform back into its juvenile polyp form. This unique process, known as transdifferentiation, involves specialized cells transforming into different cell types, effectively restarting the jellyfish’s life cycle. While Turritopsis dohrnii possesses biological immortality, meaning it can theoretically repeat this cycle indefinitely, it is not immune to external threats like predation, disease, or other environmental changes in the wild. The ability to “reset” their biological clock makes this tiny creature a subject of intense scientific study, offering insights into regeneration and aging.
