The large flower head continues to lose moisture rapidly through transpiration. A cut hydrangea left on a counter during a hot day may fully collapse and become limp within a few hours. Survival Time for Established Plants
Established hydrangeas planted in the ground are significantly more resilient than cut stems, but their survival time without water is still relatively short compared to many drought-tolerant shrubs. Techniques for Cut Stems
For cut stems, the first step is to re-cut the stem end at a sharp angle to expose fresh xylem tissue. To clear blockages caused by sap or air, several methods can be used:
- Dip the freshly cut end into alum powder, a mild acid, which helps neutralize sap and keep water channels open.
- Briefly submerge the bottom inch of the stem in very hot water for about 30 seconds to dissolve sticky sap and air bubbles blocking water flow.
If the entire flower head is wilted, the “dunking” method is highly effective, as hydrangeas can absorb water through their petals. Submerge the entire bloom and stem in cool water for 30 minutes to a few hours until the turgidity returns.
Techniques for Established Plants
For established garden plants that are wilting, deep watering is required. Apply water slowly and directly to the soil for an extended period to soak the root zone.
