A black bear’s lifespan is significantly shaped by the quality of its habitat and the availability of food resources. To perform this analysis, a premolar tooth is typically extracted from a deceased or captured bear. The tooth is then thinly sliced, stained, and examined under a microscope. Each year, a new light and dark band forms in the cementum, much like tree rings, allowing biologists to count these “annuli” to determine the bear’s age with a high degree of accuracy. Less precise field methods, such as assessing tooth wear patterns or general body size and physical characteristics, can also offer estimations but are not as reliable as the laboratory-based cementum analysis.
