How Long Can You Leave a Menstrual Disc In?

A menstrual disc is a flexible, circular device designed for internal use during menstruation. Unlike tampons or menstrual cups, it is positioned higher in the vaginal canal, specifically in the vaginal fornix, and rests behind the pubic bone. This placement allows the disc to collect menstrual fluid rather than absorbing it. Its design also means it does not create suction, making it a suitable option for individuals with an IUD.

Recommended Wear Time

Menstrual discs are safe for continuous wear for up to 12 hours. This extended wear time allows for all-day or overnight protection. Individuals with a heavier menstrual flow may need to empty their disc more frequently within this 12-hour window. Regardless of flow, the disc should be removed, emptied, and cleaned at least every 12 hours.

Potential Risks of Extended Wear

Leaving a menstrual disc in for longer than the recommended 12 hours can lead to several potential health concerns. Prolonged exposure of menstrual blood to body temperature can foster bacterial growth, leading to irritation, odor, or infection.

Though rare, Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a slight risk with any internal menstrual product. While discs pose a lower risk than tampons due to collecting rather than absorbing fluid, extended wear can slightly increase this risk. Additionally, exceeding the disc’s capacity due to heavy flow and prolonged wear can cause overflow or leakage.

Recognizing When to Empty or Remove

Several indicators signal it’s time to empty or remove a menstrual disc. The primary sign is reaching the 12-hour maximum wear limit. A feeling of fullness or minor leakage also indicates the disc is at capacity and needs emptying.

Some users experience “auto-dumping” or “self-emptying,” where the disc partially empties during a bowel movement or urination due to pelvic muscle relaxation. While convenient for heavy flows, this is not a substitute for regular emptying and cleaning within the recommended timeframe. If leaking occurs outside of using the restroom, it may suggest the disc is full, improperly inserted, or the wrong size.

Proper Care and Hygiene

Maintaining proper care and hygiene for menstrual discs is important for safety and longevity. Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and water before inserting or removing the disc to prevent introducing bacteria.

For reusable discs, clean between uses by emptying fluid, rinsing with cold water to prevent staining, then washing with warm water and mild, unscented soap. Avoid harsh or fragranced soaps, as they can irritate the vaginal area or damage the disc material.

At the end of each cycle, deep clean reusable discs by boiling them in water for 5 to 10 minutes to eliminate lingering bacteria. After cleaning, air-dry reusable discs completely and store them in a breathable pouch, avoiding airtight containers that promote bacterial growth. Disposable discs are for single use and must be discarded after each 12-hour wear period.
