Spiders are air-breathing arthropods with eight legs, fangs that inject venom, and spinnerets that produce silk. Found globally in nearly every land environment, a spider’s lifespan varies considerably across species. This variation stems from biological and environmental influences.
Factors Influencing Spider Lifespan
A spider’s lifespan is shaped by various factors, with species-specific genetics playing a primary role. Different species possess unique metabolic rates and life history strategies that influence their development and longevity. Environmental conditions are also important, as temperature can directly affect a spider’s metabolic rate and growth speed. Warmer climates may accelerate these processes, potentially leading to shorter lifespans, while colder temperatures can slow them down, extending life.
Food availability is another significant determinant of how long a spider lives. Consistent access to prey is essential for growth, reproduction, and general health. Scarcity of food can result in stunted growth, delayed maturation, and increased susceptibility to disease, ultimately shortening a spider’s life. Predation pressure also impacts survival, as spiders are prey for various animals. Human interaction, particularly in indoor environments, can also affect lifespan.
Common Spider Lifespans
Many spiders commonly encountered by people have relatively short lifespans. Common house spiders, for instance, typically live for about one to two years. Some females of these species might live up to three years, especially when they reside indoors away from predators. Cellar spiders, often known as daddy long-legs, can live for two years or more after reaching maturity, which itself takes about one year. They are frequently found indoors in stable environments like basements and crawl spaces.
Orb-weaver spiders, which are known for their intricate circular webs, generally have a lifespan of about 12 months. Female orb-weavers typically lay their eggs in late summer to autumn and then die. The spiderlings hatch in autumn, disperse, and mature the following summer, continuing the annual cycle.
Spiders with Exceptional Longevity
While many spiders have shorter lives, certain species exhibit remarkable longevity. Tarantulas are prominent examples, with many species living for 10 to 30 years. Some female tarantulas can even live over 30 years in captivity. Their larger size, slower metabolism, and often more protected lifestyles contribute to their extended lifespans.
Trapdoor spiders also exhibit impressive longevity, with an average lifespan ranging from 5 to 20 years. The longest-lived spider on record was a female trapdoor spider, named Number 16, which lived for an estimated 43 years in Australia. Her extended life was attributed to her sedentary nature, low metabolism, and protected burrow, where these spiders spend much of their lives, emerging only to ambush prey.
Male Versus Female Lifespans
Across many species, females generally live longer than males. This disparity is particularly evident in tarantulas, where males typically live for only a few years after reaching sexual maturity (often between one to six years), while female tarantulas, in contrast, can live for decades.
The shorter lifespan of male spiders is often linked to their reproductive role. Once males reach maturity, their primary focus shifts to finding a mate, which can involve increased mobility and exposure to predators. After mating, males frequently die, sometimes due to the rigors of the mating process itself or, in some species, by being consumed by the female. Female spiders, responsible for egg production and often guarding egg sacs, have a biological imperative for extended survival to ensure the continuation of their species.
