Understanding House Spider Lifespans
The term “house spider” refers to various species commonly found indoors, with lifespans varying significantly by type. The common house spider (Parasteatoda tepidariorum), also known as the American house spider, typically lives one to two years. Some females of this species may survive up to three years in undisturbed indoor environments.
Giant house spiders (Eratigena duellica or Tegenaria gigantea), which are notably larger, often live for one to two years, with females sometimes reaching several years. Another frequent indoor resident, the cellar spider (often called “daddy longlegs”), can live for two to three years.
While most house spiders have relatively modest lifespans, some species, like the common barn funnel weaver, have been observed to live up to seven years. Female spiders generally live longer than their male counterparts across various species.
Influencing Factors for Survival
A house spider’s survival indoors is directly influenced by several environmental and biological factors. A consistent supply of food is necessary, as spiders are carnivores that primarily consume insects like flies, mosquitoes, and ants, along with other arthropods. The availability of prey directly impacts their ability to thrive and reach their full lifespan. Spiders also require water, though they can survive long periods without it, sometimes 30 to 60 days without food or water. They obtain moisture from their prey or by absorbing it from the environment, such as from dew or condensation.
Stable temperature conditions are important for house spiders. As ectothermic creatures, their body temperature is regulated by their surroundings; they prefer temperatures around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. While they tolerate a wide range, extreme heat (40 degrees Celsius/104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) can be lethal. Consistent indoor temperatures help extend their longevity compared to outdoor conditions.
The presence of predators, such as certain wasps or other spiders, can significantly shorten a spider’s life. Human intervention, including insecticides or pest control, also reduces spider populations and impacts their survival.
Life Stages and Longevity
The life cycle of a house spider progresses through three main stages: egg, spiderling, and adult, with each stage contributing to the spider’s overall longevity. Spiders begin as eggs, laid by the female in protective silk sacs, which can contain hundreds of eggs depending on the species. These eggs typically hatch within two to three weeks, though this can vary with species and environmental conditions like temperature.
Upon hatching, the young spiders, known as spiderlings, resemble miniature adults. They undergo a series of molts, shedding their exoskeletons multiple times to grow, a process that can last from a few weeks to several months. During this juvenile stage, spiderlings may disperse from their hatching site, sometimes by “ballooning,” where they release silk threads to catch air currents. The final phase is adulthood, which is characterized by the spider’s ability to reproduce. While the duration of the egg and spiderling stages contributes to the overall lifespan, a significant portion of a house spider’s life is spent in the adult stage, primarily dedicated to mating and producing offspring.
